Career growth often depends on building relationships while achieving results. Here, a PepsiCo expert shares his best advice to help with both, which will also build your influence.

What steps can I take to increase my visibility and influence at work? In this edition of “Dear HR,” Chema Palomo, VP of Talent Management, LATAM, shares his practical advice and strategies.

We often want to think that our hard work and the results we achieve are enough to help us grow. I often tell others that there’s another piece to the puzzle that we too often overlook: Growth and opportunity require that others see the impact of our efforts.

None of us works in a vacuum. Organizations like PepsiCo are social environments where relationships are key to success. To advance your career, you need to know the people at your company and make sure they know you.

Here are four straightforward strategies I often recommend that can boost your visibility — and, ultimately, your influence at work.

1. Find opportunities to share

Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you. Take action by:

  • Volunteering for projects that match your skills and interests.
  • Seeking out tasks that challenge you and showcase your abilities.
  • Proposing ideas that align with company goals.
  • Offering help to colleagues who are facing challenges.

Being proactive in these ways can position you as a key contributor to your team and business.

You can also expand your presence beyond your team by joining cross-functional groups, attending company events and finding opportunities to network with others.

2. Continue to deliver high-quality work

Make sure you continue to consistently deliver results while you’re building relationships. That means you should always be mindful of the quality of your work, not just the quantity, and make sure your contributions align with your company’s vision. Also make sure you understand the needs of stakeholders and strive to meet or exceed their expectations.

This can also mean offering support, guidance or mentorship to your colleagues — sharing your knowledge and giving constructive feedback. This not only helps others achieve results, but it also enhances your reputation as a reliable and trusted professional.

3. Build credibility and act authentically

Real influence comes from trust. You earn trust by being credible and authentic and by respecting others and their perspectives. Communicate honestly and respectfully — and listen actively and empathetically.

When people see you as genuine and trustworthy, they’re more likely to support you, listen to your ideas and value your contributions. Authenticity helps you build strong, lasting relationships that are key to long-term influence.

4. Be consistent

Influence isn’t built overnight. It’s the result of consistent effort over time. To increase your influence, strive to always create positive experiences and outcomes. Follow through on your commitments, deliver on your promises and maintain high standards in your work.

Consistency also applies to relationships: Nurture your connections, follow up with your contacts, and regularly update your progress and achievements. By being consistent, you establish a reputation for reliability and accountability, which are essential for lasting influence.

By applying these principles in your daily work, you can significantly enhance your visibility and influence. This positions you as a valuable asset and a leader in your field.
