How can leaders create an environment where everyone feels confident to speak up? In this edition of “Dear HR,” Blake Carter, Global Head of Change Management, shares practical tips to help teams take risks, share ideas, and spark bold thinking.
Tip #1: Use nonverbal cues to encourage sharing
Nodding, showing interest, and using other nonverbal signals can make a big difference. If you’re meeting online, send a quick message like, “Looks like you have an idea” to create space for someone to join the conversation.
Tip #2: Pause to spark bold thinking
Silence can be powerful. By pausing after asking a question, you give people time to think. Randomly inviting someone to share their thoughts often inspires others to start forming and voicing their own ideas.
Tip #3: Keep it light when ideas don’t land
If a suggestion isn’t the right fit, light humor or gentle teasing can help keep the atmosphere positive. This builds trust and prevents the environment from feeling critical or hostile.
Tip #4: Practice active, empathetic listening
Ask deeper questions like “What do you mean by that?” or “Tell me more about what that means” to help others explore their thinking. Listening is about empathy—understanding where someone is coming from and why they see things a certain way.
By putting these actions into practice, you can create an environment where people feel safe to contribute, ideas flow freely, and collaboration thrives.
